Olivier van Noort
Olivier van Noort (1558 - February 22nd 1627) is a navigator, flibustier and first Dutch to achieve a navigation around the world.
Olivier van Noort was born in 1558 with Utrecht. Financed by merchants of the city, it leaves Rotterdam the July 2nd 1598 with 4 ships. It has as a plan to tackle Spanish and Portuguese possessions in the Pacifique and to trade with China and the islands with the Spices (currently the Moluques). Its boats are poorly equipped especially for the armament and the crew is not tested. However van Noort crosses the Atlantic, reaches Rio de Janeiro from which it is made drive back and sailed along the Brazilian dimensions and Argentinas until the Magellan Strait, tackling Portuguese and Spanish establishments. During its many coastal halts, it undergoes also losses due to the attacks of Indians. It crosses the strait and goes up along what are now the coasts Chilean and Peruvian. It captures many Spanish ships and is devoted to coastal plundering. The viceroy of News-Spain, Don Shine of Velasco lance then of the ships against him but van Noort then leaves towards the islands Ladrones then the Filipino where it plunders various establishments. It loses two ships because of a storm then another during an engagement against the Spaniards close to bay to Manila to the Filipino . The Spaniards lose their flagship, the Galion San Diego , whose wreck was found in 1995 and who transported a made porcelain treasure and gold coins.
He visits Java and Borneo in the the Indies Dutchwomen then joined the Cape and goes up towards the Netherlands. He is of return to Rotterdam the August 26th 1601 with his last ship and only 45 of the 248 sailors who accompanied it with his departure. The adventure is little known and rather low in results. But it inspired however by other forwardings which later led to the creation of the Compagnie Dutchwoman of the Eastern Indies.
In 1612, 10 years after its return, appears with Antwerp, a work in which Olivier van Noort reports his adventure and which is published under the title " Beschrijving van of moeyelyke reis rondom of werldaar of sphere, door Olivier van Noort, waarin zyne vreem of lotgevallen in voorkomen" (Amsterdam, 1612). A French translation of the work is made in 1613 pennies the title Description of the painful voyage made entour of the universe or terrestrial sphere by Olivier of Noort d' Utrech, general of the 4 ships .
