Olivier Plunket

Olivier Plunket (in English Oliver Plunket ), born in 1629 and died in 1681, is a saint of the Catholic church, archbishop and Martyr.

Its life

Olivier Plunket was born in Ireland on November 1st 1629. He was raised by his uncle Benedictine with Dublin. He then leaves to Rome in order to make studies of theology.

At the conclusion of these studies, it cannot turn over in its country because of the persecution started by Cromwell and remains with Rome three years more during which it exerts its ministry there. Then, during 12 years, he teaches with the college propaganda fide.

Ordered priest in 1654, it was named archbishop of Armagh only fifteen years later. He exerted his ministry with courage, devotion and good mood.

But, in the context of Anglo-Irish quarrels, he is calumniated and shown by one intrigant, Titus Oates, to have prepared the unloading of 20.000 French soldiers in Ireland, in addition to to have claimed money with his priests to create an army of rebellion. Transferred to London in 1678, there remained 3 years in prison before being condemned to to be hung, emptied and dismembered . Throughout tortures which it had to undergo, it did not cease returning thanks to God, forgiving with his denouncers and its torturers.

Saint Olivier thanked the judge and known as with all those which had calumniated it: I am happy of going near the Christ about which I spoke you so much.

He died on July 11th 1681 with London. (on November 1st, according to the old calendar). Its body rests in the abbey of Downside, in the county of Wilts while its head is enchased with Drogheda. He was the last catholic delivered to martyrdom with Tyburn.

Beatification - Canonization

  • Olivier Plunket was béatifié on May 23rd 1920 with Rome by the Pope Benoît XV.
