Olivier Duhamel , born the May 2nd 1950 with Neuilly-sur-Seine, is a lawyer and political economist specialist in the constitutional Law, a politician of left center and an editor French. He is specialist in the Fifth Republic and the French left, and is professor of the universities to the Institut of political studies of Paris. He is also old European Député, and chronicler with France Culture.

He is the son of the center politician Jacques Duhamel, and the husband of the lawyer and novelist Evelyne Pisier, former woman of Bernard Kouchner.

University and leading career

At the conclusion of its studies to the university Paris-X Nanterre, it supports its thesis of doctorate on the Left and Ve République , in which it analyzes the original rejection, then the rallying of the French left at the institutions and the practices created by Charles de Gaulle.

It is Professor of the universities in constitutional law to the institute of political studies of Paris, where it has given for several years an introductory course to the constitutional law and the political institutions in first year, as well as a weekly conference of comment of the topicality with Guy Carcassonne.

He is the author of several handbooks of constitutional law ( constitutional Law , a constitutional Dictionnaire , a work on the assessment of Ve République) and took part in a Histoire of the political ideas (1993) and in the Dictionnaire of political works (1995).

He is cofounder and deputy manager of publication, with Philippe Ardant, of the review of constitutional and political studies Pouvoirs , and director since 1993 of the series “political Texts” of the editions of the Threshold. He also directs the annual publication of TNS Sofres the State of the opinion since 1984, with Jerome Jaffré until in 1997, Philippe Méchet of 1997 to 2003, and Brice Teinturier since.

Political career and participation in the public debate

In 1994, it is elected European Député on the list of the Socialist party (PS); it will sit until in 2004 in the group of the European Socialist party. It was one of the principal contributors at the time of the European Convention where it represented the the European Parliament. The PS not having reinvested it for the European elections of 2004, it leaves the party.

Chronicler with the Mornings of France Culture , it signed or Co-signed several popularizing works, in particular on the European construction.

Very critical of the operation of the Fifth Republic and its tendencies “monarchists”, it is since the presidential election of 2002 in favor of a Sixth Republic and a Presidential regime, which it considers it able to establish an institutional balance which would miss with the Fifth Republic.

Since July 2007, he is member of the Comité of reflection on the modernization and the rebalancing of the institutions, set up by the President of the Republic Nicolas Sarkozy.

He is member of the club the Century.
