Oliver Martin Johnston Jr.

Olivier Martin Johnston, Jr. (known as Ollie Johnston sometimes Olly ) is an American stimulating draftsman and, pionner of animation, born the October 31st 1912 with Palo Alto, California. It is one of the members of the legendary team of the " Nine Old Men " studios Disney, only still in life. It was rewarded for the National Medal off Arts in 2005.

Biography

Johnston made its studies with the Université Stanford, the the University of California to Berkeley and the Chouinard Art Institute.

It joined the department of animation of Disney in 1935 and started to work on Blanche Snow and the 7 dwarves. He also worked as supervisor of animation on Fantasia, Bambi and Pinocchio. Its work includes/understands:

  • the judge in the Toad and the Schoolmaster (1949) and Ichabod with Frank Thomas
  • the sisters-in-law Cinderella (1950)
  • Mr. Mouche in Peter Pan (1953)
  • the Prince Jean in Robin of Wood (Disney) (1973) and Unsavoury individual with Frank Thomas. He held for Ollie a surprise by inviting it to Disneyland where he had made installed on the rails of Disneyland Railroad the engine " Marie E." . Ollie could thus make the turn of Disneyland in its own train.

It took its retirement in 1978.

With Frank Thomas, a large friend, it off wrote an explanatory book on animation entitled The Illusion Life , published for the first time at Abbeville Close in 1981. This book is regarded as the bible of the organizers for traditional animation with the hand and mainly for the animation of the characters of Disney style. This book was republished with many recoveries.

Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston twice arose all two their retirements for feature-length films by-products by Disney, they gave to their voices (english language version only) to their caricatures in

  • the iron Giant (1999) in the shape of two railway mechanics
  • Indestructibles (2004) two old Sirs declaring " That' S old school… " " Yeah, No school like the old school."

The two friends were put at the honor in documentary biographical of 1995 Frank and Ollie , directed by Theodore Thomas, wire of Frank, presented to the International festival of film of Toronto. This documentary propose their professional paths, private life and their friendship.

November 10th 2005, Ollie Johnston one of was decorated with prestigious the National Medal off Arts, given by President George W. Bush at the time of a ceremony in the Bureau oval .
