Oliva is a city of the Valencian Communauté, located in the Comarque of Safor, in the Province of Valence, in (Spain).

Geography

Oliva is located at the extreme south of the Province of Valence. It divides, from its topography, in three distinct zones: the mountain, the agricultural plain occupied by the horticultural cultures and a marshy zone in south-east. The east coast low and sandy, with sand beaches end, except for that which is more in the south, where starts the Province of Alicante. The climate is Mediterranean, with soft winters and pleasant springs.

Part of the communal territory belongs to the Natural park of Marjal de Pego-Oliva.

One reaches Oliva, since Valence by borrowing the N-332 main road.

The Playa de Oliva (beach of Oliva) constitutes a second important urban core on the territory of the commune of Oliva.

The town of Oliva is surrounded by the commune following: Alqueria of Comtessa, Does It of In Carròs, Piles and Villalonga, in the Province of Valence, and Adsubia, Dénia and Pego in the Province of Alicante.

History

Constituted in county by Alphonse Magnanime, in 1449, it had for first Master the count Francisco Gilabert de Centelles. The expulsion of the Moors, in 1609, caused large twists at the city leaving the fields and the houses to the abandonment. Oliva knew a difficult period then, without however being among the most affected cities. It will be necessary to await the 18th century, and its unification with from now on disappeared the kingdom from Valence, so that the city starts a takeoff, which will not be based as well on the economic aspect as on the cultural aspect.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Oliva was the city most populated Safor, before being joined and exceeded by Gandía.

Economy

Oliva has a very old agricultural tradition, in particular in the culture of citrus fruits, and the oranges in particular which it exports in the whole world. These last years, the tourist sector however made important great strides, cash for a considerable share of the incomes of the city.

Monuments

Of its historical past, Oliva preserves a religious building dedicated to Santa María Mayor (with invaluable files), the Church of Saint-Rock Iglesia de San Roque ) (built on the old mosque), the Vault of the Vierge of Rebolet and its old convent, the hermitages of Saint Antoine and Holy Vincent, as well as the famous chimneys of the Camino dels Rejolars (Valencian, way of the horlojers), and the Municipal Market.
