Old off Wonders

Age off Wonders is a Video game of strategy to the turn by turn realized by Triumph Studios and left in January 2000.

Gameplay

This play was conceived to take again off the ludic style of Master Magic, left under platform DOS a few years before.

One finds same proportionings of fantastic creatures there, of magic, hero evolving/moving in a universe of wargame that in this play. With this close Master off Magic was a transposition in the universe of the Heroic-fantasy of the plays of the range Civilization, allowing in particular the development of cities (" to found a cité") is a functionality absent in Age off Wonders.

Certain functionalities resulting from a play such as Warlords, in particular with regard to the approach on the heroes and the presence of ruins giving a color " medieval-fantastique" roleplay; , are also remarkable.

The part proceeds in a succession of two modes: the strategic mode on a chart of wargame, where the units evolve/move and launch out to discovered of the ground, and the tactical mode in the event of combat, which makes it possible to the player to position his units in the battle and to preserve some of them. When the exit of the combat is certain, where when a hero does not risk his skin, the program makes it possible to avoid rocking in this tactical mode to save time.

It is thus possible to carry out part of wargame type, while passing in tactical mode only for the great battles the such unfavourable seats of capitals.

Although the play is not multijoueurs with the direction " play in réseau" , it is possible to select several human players on a chart, which in this case exploit one after the other the same part. The play then does not make the economy of the major disadvantage of this type of play turn by turn: the times between each turn can be rather long.

The other players computers can be positioned with the choice according to three levels of roughness, the same chart being able to pass from a benign duel to a considerable challenge while spreading out.

The play separate in two modes:

  • strategic mode

The charts can have various sizes in X, Y and, especially, on more the three levels: surface , the basement and depths. .

Certain charts exploit this possibility considerably and give environments under which a filled up surface of natural graphics suggesting the iaque adjective Paradis hide depths whose rivers of lava give one made truly infernal.

  • tactical mode

Races

The play comprises 12 races, gathered in manner Manichéen by alignment: the camp of the good, the camp of the humanoïdes " neutres" (or not aligned) and the camp of the evil; each camp carries 4 races.

Certain races comprise natural antagonisms: Halflings - Goblins; Elves - Dark Elves; Highmen - Undead; Dwarves - Orcs.

The large charts, in particular, make it possible to introduce each race and to affect a native kingdom to them; certain boxes of landscapes are adapted for some (the forest for the elves is of a commonplace…)

This diversity is multiplied by the spheres of magic, and is underlined by the various characteristics of unit.

The leader has to him an alignment from the spheres of magic which it chooses at the beginning of part. One can very well then imagine mixings such as halflings Chaos or Orcs of the Life . The starting race imports little since the conquests will make it possible to diversify the livestock of creatures of the kingdom. On the other hand, to try to obtain a homogeneous population for a camp is important, insofar as it is possible to make emigrate the population of reference towards a conquered city, with the detriment of the indigenous race.

The relations between the player and the races become in this case extremely polarized. Another style of play consists in taking the man-lizards, which are neutral opposite that almost all the other races. One can then compose of the heteroclite armies mixing of the ambivalent capacities, causing panic in the unfavourable rows in many situations.

Scenarios and modpacks

The play is founi with an editor of scenarios and charts. This possibility received success enormously. Moreover, the appearance of the first modpack which changed the characteristics of certain units, even inverted the units available to reveal of it news, at this point was adulated by the community that the version " Old off Wonders + Warlock' S ruleset" 'became almost the standard.
