Old ksour of Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt and Oualata
The old ksour of Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt and Oualata in Mauritania were registered on the list of the world heritage in 1996. The cities of Ouadane and Chinguetti are located in the area of the Adrar, Tichitt in the area of the Tagant and Oualata in the area of the Hodh Echchargut.
These cities were founded towards XIe century to get halts with the caravans crossing the Sahara. These flourishing cities became hearths of the Saharan culture, Chinguetti thus became the 7th Holy City of Islam under the name of “city of the libraries”.
