Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz , born on June 14th, 1958 with Osnabrück, is a German politician of the social democrat Parti (SPD). It is since November 2007 federal minister for Work and the social Affairs.

It was in 2001 senator inside the city-State of Hamburg, 2002 to 2004 general secretary of the SPD, and of 2005 to 2007 first parliamentary secretary of the Groupe SPD at the Bundestag.

Family and formation

Olaf Scholz is the grandson of an employee of the railroads and the son of tradesmen of the district of Altona, with Hamburg.

It followed its schooling to Hamburg and obtained its Abitur in Gymnasium Heegen. He then studied the Droit.

He is since 1985 lawyer specialized in Law the labor and associated cabinet Hamburger Zimmermann, Scholz und Partner.

He is married with Britta Ernst, member of the Bürgerschaft of Hamburg.

Career

Scholz adhered in 1975 to the SPD. It initially militated within the Jusos, the youth organization, where it was of 1982 to 1988 substitute for the federal president; it also was of 1987 to 1989 vice-president of the International union of socialist youth. It supported at the time the Marxist wing of university social democrat Alliance (SHB).

It was of 1994 to 2000 president of district SPD of Altona, then of 2000 to 2004 president of federation SPD of Hamburg. It entered for the first time to the Bundestag at the time of the elections of 1998 direct as a elected of the district of Altona.

May 30th, 2001, Scholz succeeded Hartmuth Wrocklage at the post of senator inside Hamburg in the senate directed by Ortwin Runde, but had to give up its functions the next on October 31st after the red-green coalition had lost its majority with the provincial elections.

Entered in 2001 at the federal office of the SPD, it became on October 20th, 2002 general secretary of the Party. He resigned of this function on March 21st, 2004 after the resignation of Gerhard Schröder of the presidency of the SPD.

Become again member of the Bundestag at the time of the elections of 2002, it sat at the end of the 15th legislature at the board of inquiry charged with the business known as of the visas. October 13rd, 2005, he became first parliamentary secretary ( erste parlamentarische Geschäftsführer ) of the Groupe SPD at the Bundestag. He also has seat with the parliamentary committee of control, which controls the action of the intelligence services.

November 21st, 2007, it became federal minister for Work and the social Affairs to replace Franz Müntefering, resigner for personal reasons. It however did not take the functions of vice-chancellor, transmitted to Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It was replaced by Thomas Oppermann at the post of first parliamentary secretary of group SPD.
