Olaf Kölzig

Olaf Kölzig (born the April 6th 1970 with Johannesburg, in South Africa) is a player of professional Hockey evolving/moving in the National league of hockey for the Capitals of Washington as a goalkeeper.

Career of player

" Olie the Goalie" was fished out by Capitals in first round, 19th on the whole, of the Repêchage of entry in the LNH 1989, of the Americans of Tri-City. After having spent a few seasons in the American League of hockey with the Skipjacks of Baltimore, the Admirals de Hampton Roads and the Pirate Portland cement , he was recalled by the Capes in 1995-96 as substitute of Jim Carey; he replaced it as of the following season and was titular guard since; he holds today virtually all the records at the Capes with his position.

He led the Capes to the finale of the Coupe Stanley in 1998; he became this season only the 4th guard of the history to record 4 white plays during the same series of after-season. Unfortunately, the Capes were swept into 4 matches by the Red Wings de Détroit.

It gained the Trophée Vézina in 2000 with a card of 41-20-11, 2.24 GAA and 5 washings. It also gained in the American league the Trophée Jack A. Butterfield given to the MVP of the series in 1994 and, the same year, the Trophée Hap Holmes.

During its stay with Tri-City, it was engaged in a combat on the ice with Byron Dafoe of the Winter Hawks de Portland. During their career in the LNH, they maintained a friendly competition, if friendly makes of it that they were each one the witness of the other with their marriages respective. Kölzig counted a goal with Americans the November 29th 1989. Since 2005, it makes, with Stu Barnes, started from a group which holds property rights on Americans of Tri-City, guaranteeing that the team will remain with Kennewick (Washington) for the 10 years to be come.

Kölzig took share with the Olympic Games of Nagano in the uniform of the Équipe of Germany of hockey as titular guard: it recorded two victories and any defeat, with a superb average of allocated goals of 1.00. He repeated the Olympic experiment in 2006 with Turin. He has also the merit to be one of the 4 guards of all the history not to have granted any goal during one period of the match of stars, in 2000; he also took share with the match of Stars of 1998.

He was, in 2004, elected better player of the history of the Capes by the amateurs, with which one had required to elect the 30 best players of the history of the frankness to commemorate the 30e birthday of the club. He is also known for his services apart from the ice; he founded, in company of Byron Dafoe and Scott Mellanby, Athletes Against Autism (" Athletes against the autisme") who sensitizes people with the Autisme and collects funds to advance research. It deserved the Trophée King Clancy in 2006 for its humane work and was named one of the 10 washingtoniens of the Year 2006 by the Washingtonian Magazine in 2000.
