Okie

" Okie" is a name, which dates from the beginning of the twentieth century, which designated a resident or a native of the Oklahoma. It comes from the name of the state. Historically, if somebody used the " term; Okie" , the intention was insulting or pejorative. Generally, the residents of the politically motivated California and some writers made use of the term to appoint itinerant farm laborers (white or Métis) poor, and their family, forces to give up their farm during the Grande depression of 1930. The Californian ones used the term to nominate any poor person emigrating in their state, and not only of Oklahoma.

With time, the pejorative aspect of the term changed. Many nationals of Oklahoma consider his use as neutral, or then as a subject of pride. The pejorative character of the term depends from now on intentions on the user and circumstances of his use.
