Oka (river)

The Oka is a river of Eastern Europe which runs in Russia. It is the most important affluent of the right part of the the Volga. It crosses the town of Nijni-Novgorod.

Origin of the name

The origin of the name of Oka is not determined, although there exist many assumptions. The two principal assumptions are:

  • the assumption of a Baltic origin: Aka means, in Lituanien, Source ;
  • the assumption of a Finnish origin: Joki means, in Finnois, Rivière .
Indeed, until the arrival of the Slavic on the course of Oka, the higher course of the river was occupied by tribes Baltes ( Polekhi ), while the middle price and lower was inhabited by Finnois ( Meshera, Mouroma ).

Cours de la river

The river crosses 7 areas of Russia: those of Orel, Toula, Kalouga, Moscow, Riazan, Vladimir and Nijni-Novgorod. The most important cities located on the course of Oka are: Orel, Kalouga, Kolomna, Riazan and Nijni-Novgorod.

Navigation

Oka is navigable starting from the town of Tchekaline, and by transit since Kolomna, i.e. since the mouth of the Moskova. The river is lockful on the 100 lower km starting from the confluence of Moskova. Until the years 1960, Oka was navigable since Orel, but only in the direction of the current and per season of rising, or with the assistance of the various tanks of the river.

Affluents and characteristics

The most important affluents of Oka are, inter alia, Zoucha, Oupa, Jizdra, Ougra, Protva, the Moskova, Kliazma. The maximum width of the river is of 25 km on its middle price.
