Oignies

Oignies (to pronounce) is a common French, located in the department of the Pas-de-Calais and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais. It belongs to the Communauté of agglomeration of Hénin-Carvin which gathers 14 common , that is to say 125  000 inhabitants. Its inhabitants are called Oigninois. Geography

In the center of the Field, the town of Oignies is surrounded by Carvin, Courrières, Libercourt, Dourges and Ostricourt. At 16 kilometers of Lens and at 20 of Lille, the town of Oignies is located in the middle of old the Field and extends on 552 hectares of which 372 are urbanized. The basement of the city is carboniferous.

History

The town of Oignies seems to be inhabited as of the first centuries of the Christian era. Its name of then was Ongniacume. It is in the park of the Castle of Mrs. De Clercq that on June 7th, 1842, engineer Mulot discovers there coal, a aubene for the Area which will develop then mining industry. December 21st, 1990, the last gaillette of coal went back to pit 9/9 (a) of Oignies. This very mediatized event will mark the end of the mining extraction in the North of France. The slogan of oignies is: " Oignies moves the life! " , found by the municipal council of the young people.

Rando of the spoil heaps

Every year, first Sunday of February, the VTT-Club of Oignies organizes Rando of the Spoil heaps . In 2007, this excursion, opened with all, still met a sharp success with more than 1000 participants! It becomes thus one of the excursions impossible to circumvent of the Area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

It offers to all the participants a voyage through the Field. The hikers furrowing on the ways, can admire Chevalement S, Terrils, cities mining and sites reconverted after the closing of the Houillères. This inheritance is very expensive with the eyes of the inhabitants of the Field, former Minors, wire and grandson of Minors. This rando is dedicated to the memory of those and those which built this landscape.
