A notable exception occurred in 1960, when Richard Nixon, republican, obtains there 53,28% vis-a-vis John Kennedy, democrat and victorious of the election.

In 2004, Ohio was one of the principal stakes of the presidential election. George W. Bush which had carried the State in 2000 it again carried in 2004 with 51% of the votes and a more reduced margin against the democratic candidate John Kerry. The proverb was once again confirmed. The last democrat to have carried Ohio is Bill Clinton in 1996.

Since 2007, the governor is the democrat Ted Strickland.

The posts of Secretary of State and secretary to the treasure are held by republicans. Since January 2007, the Attorney General of the State is the democrat Marc daN.

The 2 rooms of the State are under the control of the republicans. At the time of the legislature 2007 - 2008, the Lower House of 99 seats is controlled by 53 republicans and the Senate of 33 seats by 21 republicans.

However, the mayors of the six plus big cities of the State (Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, and Dayton) are democrats. The urban area of Cincinnati was one rare urban areas of the country to be voted for the republican candidate at the time of presidential of 2004.

At the federal level, at the time of the session 2007-2008, 11 of the 18 representatives of the State to the Congrès of the United States are republican. The State is represented with the Senate by the democrat Sherrod Brown and the republican George Voinovich.
