Ogonek
The ogonek (of the Polish “small tail”) is a sign Diacritique of the Latin alphabet, it is used in particular in Polish and Lituanien to mark the nasality vowel to which it is attached, like in some Amerindian Langues.
In Lithuanian
The sign, called nosinė , sticks to the four fundamental short vowels of the Lithuanian (has, E, I, U): Ą/ą, Ę/ę, Į/į, Ų/ų were formerly nasal vowels, whose nasality was lost today with the profit of a lengthening. One can thus regard these nasal histories as recent long vowels, in opposition to the historical long vowels O, ė, there, ū . The į and the ų respectively merge in the pronunciation with the long vowels there and ū , while the ą and the ę are distinct from the nonnasal long vowels O and ė , more closed.
