Ogdoade d\' Hermopolis

The Ogdoade d' Hermopolis is the unit formed by the eight geniuses of Hermopolis which spouted out frozen floods: the Noun, paramount ocean which precedes the existence by the world according to the Egyptians.

Included initially in this not-world, formless and désincarné, they ended up forming the will of initial creation which will give the first spark of life. They gathered then in four couples formed each one of a god and sound during female, and are the personification of the elements of the chaos which preceded creation. Heh and Hehet, space infinity, Kekou and Kekout, major darkness, Noun and Nounet, the couple of initial water and Amon and Amonet, which is hidden. The four male entities have frog heads and the female ones of the heads of snakes. All are fitted heads of dogs.

A text of Edfou reports their appearance and its initial effect on the organization of the world: Within the paramount ocean appeared the emerged ground. On this one, the Eights came to the existence. They revealed a lotus from which Re left, comparable with Shou. Then it came a button from lotus from where dwarf emerged, auxiliary female necessary, which Re saw and wished. From their union was born Thot which created the world by the Verb.

Since their work of creation, these eight initial gods rest in the underground world under the hillock of Médinet-Habou (Djêmé), traditionally located under the sanctuary of the small temple of which one can visit still there, and taking care of the rising daily newspaper of the sun or the course of the the Nile. The town of Hermopolis bore the Egyptian name of Khéménou ( the city of the eight ).

They represent paramount chaos thus from which was born the sun.
