It is called " honest Opposition of Its Majesté" to show that, although the group is in opposition to the government, it remains honest with the Crown (the incarnation of the Canadian state) and thus in Canada.
Since the Canadian federal election of 2006, it is the Liberal party of Canada which forms the Official opposition.

It receives also more funds for research and the personnel that the other parties.
After the election of 1925, the Official opposition was the party with the most seats with the communes, the preserving . The liberal , carried out by William Lyon Mackenzie King, were able to form a minority government in spite of the fact that they had a dozen seats of less than the conservatives because they were able to attract each other the support of the Parti progressist to be maintained with the capacity. In the same way, in Ontario, the Liberal party of Ontario was able to form a minority government of 1985 with 1987 in spite of the fact that they held less seats than the Parti progressist-conservative Ontario, thanks to the support of the Nouveau Democratic party of Ontario.
In 1993, the Parti reformist disputed the right of the Québécois Bloc to form the Official opposition under the terms of the fact that it was about a party souverainist. The president decided however in favor of the Block.
The chief of the party which forms the Official opposition is called the chief of the Opposition and can live with Stornoway, the official residence of the chief of the Opposition to Ottawa.
There is also an Official opposition with the Sénat of Canada. It is about the party with the greatest number of senators which does not form the government. As the party forming the government is determined by the House of Commons, the Official opposition with the Senate can in makes hold more seats with the Senate than the government. However, the habit wants that the Senate approves the laws adopted with the House of Commons even if the government has only one minority with the Senate.
Caution: the party forming the Official opposition with the Senate is not necessarily the same one as with the House of Commons. Of 1993 with 2003, the Official opposition with the Senate was the Parti progressist-conservative Canada, even if the Québécois Bloc formed the Official opposition with the Room of 1993 with 1997, followed Parti reformist Canada, then the Canadian Alliance of 1997 to 2003. This was due to the fact that the Québécois Block and the Party reformist did not have senators. However, when the senator Gerry German St made defection of the progressist-conservatives towards Canadian Alliance in 2000, he affirmed that he should be recognized like the chief of the Official opposition to the Senate, since Canadian Alliance formed the Official opposition with the House of Commons. The president of the Senate decided however against him, since the Party progressist-conservative was the greatest opposition party.
