Official Classification of the wines of Bordeaux of 1855
The official classification of the wines of Bordeaux of 1855 is the reference established at the time on the request of the emperor Napoleon III for the World Fair of Paris of 1855. The traders of viticultural industry established a classification according to the reputation of the Château X and the price of their production, which at the time was directly in relation to quality.
The wines were classified in importance of the first to the fifth vintage. All the reds came from the area of the Médoc except the Château Haut-Brion of the Graves. The white, then marginal, were limited to the liqueur-like variety of the Sauternes and Barsac on two levels.
Two changes took place since the creation of the classification: in 1856 Château Cantemerle was added like fifth vintage and in 1973 Château Sheep-Rothschild obtained to pass from second to first vintage. The vineyards changed surface without that not being taken into account. This classification is a favorite subject of discussion of the amateurs.
