A officer is the holder of a Grade or a Charge or Office.
The use more running of the term indicates a military officer, soldier charged to order a unit or qualified specialist.
In France, there exist however several types of civil officers:

- the members of the legal profession
- the officers firemen
- officers of the Merchant navy
The title of officer is also employed in certain chivalrous orders or honorary, like the Légion of honor.
