Office puts

The Met Office (in an original manner an abbreviation of Meteorological Office but maintaining its official name) is the British national service of Météorologie. Its district-general is located at Exeter in the county of Devon to the the United Kingdom. Also known under the term of UKMET , this service is present in all the British territories as at Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands ( Falklands ) in addition to British Isles.

History and structure

The service was founded in 1854 like a small section of the Board off Trade (Chamber of commerce), under the crook of Robert FitzRoy, for the service with the Navigation. It was to transfer later to the Ministère from Defense and more recently became an agency of the semi-indépendante having a role of Public service and commercial Crown. He moved his old offices of Bracknell in the Berkshire towards Exeter in 2003.

The Met Office also has some specialized centres:

  • the Joint Centers for Mesoscale Meteorology (JCMM) at the university of Reading in the Berkshire for research on the scale méso (phenomenon of less than 20 km of diameter).

  • the Joint Centers for Hydro-Meteorological Research (JCHMR) with Wallingford in the Oxfordshire for hydrometeorological research.
  • Service bureaus or forecast in military bases, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force .
  • a center of forecast to Aberdeen.

Types of forecasts

  • Its older service is the Prévision with the navigators, diffused on Radio operator BBC 4, is always of a paramount interest for the safety of the Navire S. This service of forecast makes even party of the folklore, the books and the songs having been written about it.

  • the Met Office is one of the two world centers for the air forecasts with long range, called World Area Forecast Center or WAFC . The Met Office is WAFC London and the other is the center of Kansas City (Missouri), the United States of America ( WAFC Washington ). These two centers produce charts of winds, temperatures, clouds and volcanic ash around the sphere in collaboration with the national centres of other countries.
  • It produces the weather forecasts and warnings for the public.
  • the Met Office uses its Superordinateur Hadley Center for Climate Prediction and Research to roll a numerical model of Prévision of time called Unified Model . This model produces forecasts day laborers as well as forecasts for the simulation of the climate changes. In operational mode (first 10 days), various configurations are used for the court and the long run, and this, several times per day.
  • It also produces a model of dispersion of the pollutants called NAME . It was developed in an original manner for the nuclear accidents after the Catastrophe of Tchernobyl in 1986, but now used for the forecast of the Qualité of the air.
