Office of the census of the United States
The Office of the census of the United States (English: United States Census Bureau ) belongs to the Département Commercial of the United States. The Constitution of the United States enacts that every ten years, the office will count the population of the country and, with this information, will change the number of the representatives to the Congrès. Moreover, the office gathers statistics on the country, the citizens and the economy.
It created and manages the Population Clock , meter which gives in real-time an estimate of the populations American and world.
The United States Code codifies the legal authority of the Office of the Census.
The census in the United States
The first census having taken place in the United States was the census of 1790 (3 929.000 inhabitants).
The last census having taken place according to manual methods took place in 1880. Hermann Hollerith took part in his examination, then worked with the American Bureau of the patents, where it developed the Perforated card which bears its name. This method was used with automation of the census as 1890, which was the first application of scale of the techniques Mécanographique S in the History.
The Recensement is not obligatory in the United States. The mention of the Race is optional on the forms: each one is free of notching or not the boxes concerning the membership Ethnique or Linguistique (for example for the Hispanic group). Moreover, the Race is indicated on no document of identity (driving license, chart of social security or passport). The indentity card does not exist in the United States. Since 1990, the office of census makes it possible homosexual to declare boyfriends at the time of the social survey.
The census makes it possible to observe the social evolutions and Culturelle S of the country and to envisage the policies as regards employment, of health or retirement.
Areas of census
The seat of the Office is located at the 4600 Silver Hill Road, Suitland-Silver Hill, in the Maryland.
There exist several areas of census, which include each one several states:
- the North-East
- the South
- Middle West
- the West
Regional offices are in twelve cities: Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Strait, Chicago, Kansas City, Seattle, Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver and Los Angeles. Additional offices are used to facilitate the operations at the time of the decennial censuses.
