Office of the Breton language

The Office of the Breton language was creates on May 1st 1999.

The creation of this office which takes the continuation of the “Service of the Breton language” which existed within Skol uhel rear Vro (cultural Institut of Brittany) is important for the future of the Breton.

Mission

One of its missions is to treat in a scientific way the data socio-linguistics using speaking charts. It is thus brought to play the part of observatory of the Breton language (rear Arsellva brezhoneg) by publishing these data, and to advising the communities for the toponyms and the microtoponymes of the land register, so that this last is revised as in Catalogne North. It is the support of TermBret, the co-operative service of terminology which publishes lexicons by speciality. Lastly, it must assist the private individuals, the administrations and the companies which want to use the Breton one. (42 administrations, associations or companies called upon him of July 1st 1999 with the September 15th 1999).

The Breton one

The Office takes part in the promotion of the courses of Breton for adults. For the year 1998-1999, it published an approach of manpower of the courses of Breton for adults: 9.300 adults followed courses, either the evening, or by training courses, or by correspondence. 6.700 followed courses, including 1.200 in High-Brittany (550 in Ille-et-Vilaine and 462 in Loire-Atlantique). In Brittany, 165 organizations propose courses of the evening and there are of them 28 out of Brittany including 15 in Paris region.

In 2003, the Office published a road map of the Brittany into Breton. This chart includes the Loire-Atlantique.

Financing and organization

The Office which is an independent association chaired by Lena Louarn (treasurer: rear Alan Gall) has a budget of 1 M€ mainly provided by the Area Brittany]. The seat is with [[Carhaix]] where its director works [[Fulup Jakez]] and in charge one of the development agency of the Breton one.
