Office of Niger

The office of Niger is an irrigated perimeter built in the Delta of the river Niger with the Mali.

Created in 1932 by the colonizing French in the lower delta of the River Niger, the project had as an ambition to create a vast perimeter irrigated of almost a million hectares in order to developing the culture of the Coton with the profit of colonial textile industries.

Between 1934 and 1945 is built a bridge-stopping with Markala, on the river to 35 km of Ségou. It is inaugurated in 1947. Of a 816 meters length, it is built out of metal and is overhung of a road. With an earth embankment of 1813 meters, this stopping makes it possible to record the level of the water of 5,5 meters upstream of the low water level. Thanks to the canal systems of irrigations and drainage, the perimeter allowed the installation of 82.000 hectares irrigated surfaces allowing the culture of the Riz and the Canne sugar.

In 1994, the Office of Niger was restructured in a public corporation related to commercial industrial and.
