Office lady
A office lady , term often shortened in OL (オーエル, ōeru ), is a Japanese active woman carrying out tasks of office on low level of responsibility, such as serving the, doing work of secretariat or reception.
Original OL must be distinguished from the employees with whole share shokuin (職員) gradually appeared these twenties or thirty last years, which they ambitionnent to make career in their company. The existence of OL is indeed a product of the “traditional” designs according to which for a woman the marriage is a stage necessary and it is him which determines its profession: housewife or employee of the company, the family trade of his/her husband if necessary; any other employment can be only provisional. The tacit rule was that a woman was to leave her work after the marriage, because it became less effective, not being able to devote itself fully to two tasks; only minor tasks were thus entrusted to him. Of course, the marriage always does not arrive and unmarried OL , generally living still with their parents at the adulthood do not miss, just as those which “are encrusted”, becoming employees of long life working full-time, but with little promotion appropriateness.
OL was until the middle of the Seventies practically the only statute offered to the women in the companies, but the work world evolved/moved. More and more of Japanese women long studies continue, in particular abroad, and ambitionnent to have a professional path. In addition, one observes the progressive appearance company founders, those being able to tend to choose more easily of the women than the traditional companies places from there, preserving, and dominated by the men.
Representations
