Of Knaben Wunderhorn (Mahler)

The Lieder on poems of “Of Knaben Wunderhorn” are songs for voices and orchestra composed by Gustav Mahler.

The texts, like most of the texts used by Mahler in its symphonies and Lieder, come from the collection Of Knaben Wunderhorn ( the magic horn of the child ).

As they do not form a cycle, there is no of preset nature of interpretation. Twelve of these Lieder were published in 1899 pennies the title Humoresken (Humoresques) in the following order:

  1. Der Schildwache Nachtlied - Music of night of the sentinel (February 1892 January)

  2. Verlor' Müh - a Waste of time and effort (February 1892)
  3. Trost im Unglück - Consolation in misfortune (April 1892)
  4. Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? - Which imagined this ditty? (April 1892)
  5. Das irdische Leben - terrestrial life (after April 1892)
  6. Of Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt - the sermon of St Antoine de Padoue with the fish (August 1893 July)
  7. Rheinlegendchen - Small legend of the Rhine (August 1893)
  8. Lied of Verfolgten im Turm - Song of persecuted in the tower (July 1898)
  9. Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen - Where sound the beautiful trumpets (July 1898)
  10. Lob of the hohen Verstandes - Praise of the reason (June 1896)
  11. Urlicht - primitive Light (1893)
  12. Es sungen drei Engel - Three angels sing (1895)

Urlicht (made up in 1892 then orchestrated in July 1893) quickly became the fourth movement of the Symphonie n° 2. Es sungen drei Engel is directée made up for the Symphonie n° 3, requiring a chorus of boys in addition to one viola soloist. It is the only one of the twelve songs for which Mahler did not write a version for voice alone and orchestra, and it is also the only one which it did not publish separately. An orchestral version without voice of Of Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt constitutes the base of the Scherzo in the Symphony n° 2, and idem for Ablösung im Sommer in the Symphony n° 3.

At that time, an additional song Das himmlische Leben (celestial life) made up in February 1892 (then orchestrated in March 1892) belonged to the batch. But during the publication in 1899, it was réorchestrée to become the finale of the Symphonie n° 4. Thus, it on the one hand was withdrawn from the collection, and on the other hand did not profit from a version for voice alone and piano.

After 1901, Urlicht and Es sungen drei Engel were withdrawn from the collection, and were replaced in the late editions by two other songs:

  • Revelge (July 1899)
  • Der Tambourg' salt - the small player of drum (August 1901)
