Odysseum is a district of Montpellier specialized in the activities of leisures and the trade. It is in the course of construction since 1998.

Localization

The district is located on left bank of the Lez, in the south-east of the district of the Millénaire dedicated to the activities of high-technology. Odysseum was built on one of the still agricultural territories of the commune at the end of the years 1990. Since 1998, the district is served by public transport: passage of the line of bus n°12 bound for the Millenium and of the Field of Grammont and a line of night, then it is the terminus of the line 1 of the tram and terminus of several lines of bus suburban and departmental. As from January 2007, the urban line n°9 connects Odysseum to the Domaine of Grammont, a funerary, ludic and sporting complex isolated in the east from the commune.

By the avenues of the Millenium and the avenue Pierre Mendès-France in north, Odysseum is accessible since the highway A9. The avenue from World the 98 connects it directly to Lez by the district of Port Marianne, to the district of Richter, and with the communes of the south (shopping malls, airport and beaches) by the avenue of the Sea and the road of Carnon.

History

Initiated by the mayor Georges Frêche, this district knew a genesis marked by legal procedures launched in particular by associations of tradesmen of the Écusson, those of the Polygone shopping mall and Chamber of commerce and of industry of Montpellier, concerned of the competition of this new zone of activities. In 1998, it is the fear of the Cinémas Diagonal vis-a-vis the opening of the Multiplexe Gaumont; in 2005, it is at the time of the opening of the équimentier of furnishing Ikea.

The first established activities are devoted to the leisures and of private initiative with a cinema Gaumont in 1998 multiplexes, and public with the Patinoire Végapolis in 2001, the Galileo planetarium in 2002. In the years which follow a street of restaurants are constituted: the Ulysses alley.

Between the western part made up between 1998 and 2003 and the Ikea store, three zones are envisaged:

• in 2005-2006, opening and progressive construction of a retail park close to the place of France, addresses station-terminus of the tram, and opening of the aquarium Mare Nostrum at the end of 2007,
• a shopping mall of 200.000 m ² served by a new section of the tram line, and whose first stone is posed on July 2nd, 2007,
• being neighborly with a hypermarket of the Groupe Casino.
