Odontogic studies in France

The training of the dental surgeon is done in six years at least after the baccalaureat in a university (a UFR of Odontology). These studies proceed according to arrété of September 27th, 1994, modified by the decrees of May 24th, 2005 and of February 27th, 2007.

Course of the studies

The odontological studies are composed of 3 cycles:

1st cycle

It lasts 2 years.

PCEM 1 (first cycle of the medical studies, year common to the dies of medicine and ancillary medical.). At the conclusion of this year, the students pass a contest, with a given number of places for each die (what one calls the Numérus Clausus ). The students classified in useful row can continue in 2nd year. The courses relate to the fundamental medical matters.
PCEO 2 (first academic cycle odontological). The students begin practical works which will teach them the gestural one from the acts. Theoretical teaching relates to the medical and odontological matters fundamental.

Before the beginning of the second year, the students carry out an introductory course to the care male nurses 4 week old.

2nd Cycle

It lasts 3 years.

DCEO 1 (second cycle of odontological studies 1). The students continue practical works, and teaching is directed towards the clinical and diagnostic practice.
DCEO 2. The students gain the statute of external in odontology, and this thus find in dental health care centres and take part in the hospital functions. The theoretical courses are directed towards the private clinic.
DCEO 3. The students continue to carry out clinical training courses and clinical theoretical courses. It is also during the DCEO 3 that the students pass the CSCT (Certificate of Clinical and Therapeutic Synthesis), examination of synthesis relating to the whole of the knowledge acquired of 2nd at the 5th year. This certificate makes it possible the student to prescribe his hand of the drugs and health products, to carry out replacement of dental surgeons at the time of their holidays or to be a collaborator of a dental surgeon as an assistant student.

3rd cycle

Two possibilities:

the cycle runs which lasts one year with clinical training courses of participation in the hospital functions. The validated year the student can soutrenir his thesis of doctor of dental surgery . Since year 2007/2008, the students in 6th year must also carry out an active introductory course professional, at a dental surgeon, and this during 200 with 250h on the whole of the year. The student looks after the patients under the aegis of the main dental surgeon of training course, then in controlled autonomy.
the long cycle (3 years) with the boarding school to obtain the Certificate of In-depth studies in odontology . For the moment, the boarding school opens the door with the teaching hospital careers, but in the long term, it will be specializing, opening the door on a speciality (dento-facial orthopedy or oral surgery).

Currently a speciality is recognized and taught in France, it acts of dento-facial orthopedy (or orthodontics), accessible via the CECSMO (Certificate of Special Clinical studies, Mention Orthodontics) after the thesis or a footbridge via the boarding school. Another speciality is recognized in France, but not taught yet, it is about the oral surgery. This speciality will allow the future dental surgeons who wish to direct themselves only towards this discipline to have a exercise recognized as tel. According to the reforms in progress, this speciality will be accessible via boarding school the 3 year old, which will be common with the maxillo-facial surgeons.

Thesis of doctor of dental surgery

To be able to exert, the student must support a thesis in the 18 months following the end of his 6th year. This thesis is a thesis of exercise, publicly constant in front of a jury made up Professors, Lecturer and Teaching hospital Assistant in odontology and/or medicine (as a guest).
