Odinstårnet

Odinstårnet (“the tower of Odin”) was a Tour of observation located on Bolbro Bakke (“the hill of Bolbro”) at Odense, on the island of Fyn (Denmark). The construction of the tower, high, 177 meters took place in 1934 - 1935, starting from remaining materials after the construction of the old bridge of Small Belt, and required 30 tons of steel: 2700 tons of concrete, and a half-million Danish crowns, a considerable sum.

It had two platforms of observation. The first, located at 70 meters above the level of the ground, was a restaurant with a big room in the star shape which can accommodate 160 sitted people. Its ceiling was decorated with a large chart with the island with Odense in its center. All the cities of the island were indicated there by their direction, their name and their armorial bearings. The second platform, located at 140 meters height, offered a sight much larger. A spiral staircase left there and made it possible to arrive at the Konkyliebaren (the “Bar of the Conch”), where the tables were placed on each stair. The kitchen of the tower were suspended under the restaurant of the first platform, and was regarded as very modern.

The tower opened its doors the May 29th 1935. It quickly became a symbol and an object of pride for Odense and all the island of Fyn, as well as a popular tourist attraction: during the only year 1935, she was visited by more: 213000 visitors, of which many foreigners. Those claimed to see the totality of the island from its platforms of observation, that is to say with more than 50 kilometers of distance. The tower was also a privileged playing field of the manufacturers of models of planes.

The tower of Odin was destroyed with 6:15 of the morning the December 14th 1944 by a bomb posed by a group of saboteurs Danish Nazis ordered by Henning E. Brøndum. The tower crumbled completely, too damaged to be rebuilt. It took two months to remove the metal debris, and almost ten years for the concrete.

The May 29th 2004, day of the 69e birthday of the inauguration of the tower, of the students of the Odense Tekniske Gymnasium set up a 12 height meters counterpart of the tower on the site where it had been drawn up.
