Odes and Ballades

Odes and Ballades , published in 1828, is the collection of the poems of youth of Victor Hugo (texts published of 1822 with 1828). The inspiration of the poems is at the same time monarchist and catholic, although during the successive editions one finds many indices of the evolution of the author towards political liberalism.

Plan of the work

Victor Hugo wrote six forewords for this collection: in 1822,1823,1824,1826,1828 and 1853. In the last, he explains why it does not fear the wrong of a republication of these writings monarchists whereas it can “date this foreword from the exile”.
