A oculus , also called a bull's eye is, in Architecture, a small opening or Lucarne, of circular form or similar (one finds of them hexagonal or of Ovale S).

This opening can be practiced on a frontage, a roof, a carries, a Mur, a Cloison, etc It is generally placed in the upper part of its support. One also finds some in the center of many Coupole S, and at the top of a tympanum in the Latin basilicas.

It can be provided with a Vitre and/or a Grill.

The goal is to let enter the Lumière of the day and, if it is not glazed, of the Air. See also in the bell-tower for to mount the bells in the churches.

In a party taken decorative, the increasing oculus will become pink or Rosace in Gothic art .
