The Museum and oceanographical Institut of Monaco are a founded Musée of the Mer in 1889 and a founded Institut ion Océan ograpic in 1906 by the prince Albert Ier of Monaco (1848-1922) under the supervision of the Minister of education main road French, based on the rock of Monaco on the Riviera.

Geography

The museum and oceanographical institute of Monaco are located on the rock of Monaco vis-a-vis the the Mediterranean close to the Palais of Monaco at 20 km of Nice.

History

In 1889, the prince Albert Ier of Monaco, called “the prince navigator” makes build the oceanographical museum of Monaco entirely dedicated to the sea, with Laboratoire S, Collection S of parts brought back of its explorations, Aquarium S of fauna and Flore of the underwater funds of the the Mediterranean and dependences.

The museum has the role of developing and of making known with the public the Océanographie through the historical collections of the Prince founder, the permanent and temporary exposures or the alive collections of its aquariums.

The museum is one of the most imposing buildings of the rock with the Palais of Monaco, the only one with being with cliff blank and going down along this cliff to the Mediterranean, 80 m lower. The prince-scientist declared during the inauguration: “Here, Sirs, you see it, the ground Monegasque made emerge a proud and inviolable temple dedicated to the new divinity who reigns on the intelligences”.

Legation at the Institute of France

In 1906, after years of research and oceanographical forwardings, then 58 years old, it created the Fondation Albert Ier street Saint-Jacob with Paris in France, Reconnue public utility, so that its scientific work is continued. It equips the foundation with a capital, which disappeared unfortunately gradually with monetary erosion.

Like gift of birth, it made gift of the oceanographical museum of Monaco to its foundation. The Foundation Albert Ier and the museum are thus French.

The reigning princes of Monaco are full “Honorary presidents” of the Board of directors of the museum.

The institute is financed almost entirely thanks to the import duties paid by the Tourisme.

The commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau

In 1957, ordering it Cousteau is named director of the oceanographical museum. Its nomination coincides with the development of tourism in Monaco.
