The observatory
Historically, it is the first observatory of the southern European Observatoire (ESO - European Southern Observatory ). Silla is composed of 19 Télescope S Coupole S, although today the majority are closed and out-service. Silla remains nevertheless the largest observatory of the Southern hemisphere.Silla is with a Altitude of approximately 2400 meters, on the southern edge of the Désert of Atacama, with 160 kilometers in the north of the city of Serena. Visible since Silla is the American observatory of Las Campanas. The coordinates of Silla are 29º 15.3 ' south & Longitude 70º 44.3 ' west.
In an original manner, Silla was called “Chinchado”, but was then famous according to its form. Indeed, “Silla” means “the chair” or “the saddle” in Spanish.
Silla is an ideal place to observe the green Rayon, the place also presents an interesting site of Pétroglyphe S, of which some can be considering here.
