Observatory of Juvisy-sur-Orge
The observatory of Juvisy-sur-Orge or observatory Camille Flammarion is a astronomical Observatoire founded in 1883 by the Astronome French Camille Flammarion with Juvisy-sur-Orge.
In 1882, Camille Flammarion receives this old relay of station of one of its admirors and hastens to transform it into observatory. On the gate of entry, it enters the currency AD veritatem per scientam (towards the truth using science).
The observatory is attended during more than one half-century and the observations which are carried out there by Camille Flammarion and the astronomers which assist it make town of Juvisy a high place of the scientific research until the Second world war.
In 1910, Camille Flammarion makes build, by the architect Daniel Roguet, above the main door, a Sundial which will be renovated in 1972 then 1998. It also builds in the garden a weather laboratory and constitutes a very important scientific library.
To died of its widow, in 1962, the observatory is bequeathed to the astronomical Société of France which rents it for 99 years at the town of Juvisy. In 1980, the monument is classified, it is registered with the inventory of the historic buildings in 1996. In 1997, the collection of the scientific objects of Camille Flammarion is also classified.
The observatory is currently in sorry state: the Télescope rests on beams weakened by the worms which constantly threaten to break. However, the astronomical company of France does not have the appropriations for its restoration. The town of Juvisy and the astronomical company of France work to build a project giving again at this observatory its statute of cultural pole.
January 24th, 2006, the Board of directors of the Société of mutual guarantee of the real and land professions (SOCAF) accepted the principle of a collection of funds near its: 45000 members for the restoration of the observatory and on April 25th of the same year, the Fondation Maxime Goury-Laffont poured: 20000 euros for the restoration of the glasses of Camille Flammarion.
