Observatories of Mauna Kea

The observatory of Mauna Kea is a collection of astronomical observatories independent, cash the Télescope S among largest and most powerful of the world and located at the top of the Volcan Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. The observatory covers a zone of 2 km ² known under the anglophone name of astronomy Precinct - pregnant of astronomy in the scientific reserve of Mauna Kea.

The enclosure of astronomy is established in 1967. The University off Hawaii manages the ground and allocates beams at several multinational observatories which invested for more than two billion Euro S. the zone is protected by the Historial Preservation Act for its range in the culture hawaïenne. The song of hawaïen creation says that Mauna Kea is the progenitor of the people hawaïen. The Altitude and the insulation of the site in the middle of the Pacific Ocean do one of best in the world of it. The site is ideal for the optical observations, Infrarouge and in the band of the micrometer to the millimetre. The statistics of Seeing on the site shows that the median Seeing of CFHT is 0.43 second of arc.

The buildings dedicated to the Astronome S are located at 2.835 m of altitude, the information center for the visitors to 2.775 m, the instruments themselves are installed with the telescopes with 4.205 Mr. altitude is sufficiently high so that one advises with the visitors and the scientists to wait 30 minutes at a less altitude before going up until the top.

Telescopes

The Télescope S at the top of Mauna Kea are financed by government agencies of various nations. The university of Hawaii manages two of them on a total of 12, all located at the top or in these immediate neighborhoods.
