Obrovac (Bačka Palanka)

Obrovac , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Обровац, in Hungarian hu German Boróc and of Obrowatz, is a locality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. It belongs to the municipality of Bačka Palanka in the district of Bačka Southerner. In 2002, it counted: 3177 inhabitants, of which: 2870 Serb (90,33%) and 133 Roms (4,18%).

Obrovac is officially classified among the villages of Serbia.

History

The Serbes were established in the village in 1308. It was destroyed by the Ottoman Empire in 1526, after the Bataille of Mohacs. The village took importance at the 16th century.

In 1698, inhabitants come from Metković (today Nova Gajdobra) settled in Obrovac. In 1757, one built a school and the orthodoxe church. 1786, 138 families Serb lived in the village. At the same time many German arrived, coming from Bavaria. In 1825, a Catholic church and a school for the young Germans were built in Obrovac. In 1904, the village counted: 1985 German and: 1072 Serb.
