Oblast of Leningrad
The oblast of Leningrad (in, Léningradskaïa oblast ) is a federal subject of Russia (Oblast) of the federal District of the North-West drawing its name from Lénine. It contains Saint-Pétersbourg, known in the past under the name of Leningrad (1924 - 1991), but in is administratively separate. The oblast preserved its name after the fall of the Soviet mode, in spite of the fact that the city which gave him its name was renamed.
The oblast was initially known under the name of Ingrie (until in 1927), but this area contained also the Isthme of Karelia, which was yielded to the Finland 1940 with 1945, before reinstating the Russia at the conclusion of the Second world war.
It covers a surface of: 85300 km ² and counts: 1669205 inhabitants (2002). The most populated city is Gatchina, with: 88659 inhabitants.
