Oblast de Riazan

The Oblast de Riazan (in Russian: Ряза́нскаяо́бласть) is an area Russia (Oblast). It covers a surface of 39  600 km ² and a population of: 1227910 inhabitants (2002). Its administrative center is Riazan, which is also the only big city of the area, with its 535  000 inhabitants.

The area is in the plain of Eastern Europe, more precisely in the plain of Oka Don. The Oka is the River more important  ; it crosses the area of west in east.

The history of the principality of Riazan goes back to the 10th century. Its position in edge of the area populated by the Russians exposed it in a permanent way to the wars. It was the case of the Mongolian invasion of 1237. The principality became again in the Russian empire only in 1521.

The economic activity of the area is primarily turned towards agriculture. Riazan makes exception with an industry centered on machine tools manufacture.
