Oberkommando der Wehrmacht

The Oberkommando der Wehrmacht was the supreme command of the German armed forces of 1938 to 1945.

It was created on Ordre of Führer on February 4th, 1938 following the Affaire Blomberg-Fritsch to replace the ministry for Reich to the War ( Reichskriegsministerium ), Adolf Hitler wanting to have bent frank ones for its policy of annexations and conquests.

The OKW broke up into:

  • the Oberkommando of Heeres (OKH) for the terrestrial forces;
  • the Oberkommando der Luftwaffe (OKL) for the air forces;
  • the Oberkommando DER Marine (OKM) for the naval forces.

The marshal Wilhelm Keitel was chief of the OKW of 1938 with 1945 and it signed for this reason the capitulation of the Germany the May 8th 1945. The general Alfred Jodl was the chief of staff of 1939 with 1945.

Towards the end of the Second world war, the OKW on all fronts supervised military operations except for the Eastern face.
