Obdulio Varela is the captain of the team of Uruguay which gains, against any waiting, the Football world cup of 1950 at the expense of the Brésil at the time of the last match at the stage of Maracanã to Rio de Janeiro. This quadrangular tournament strictly speaking does not envisage a “finale”, but the two South American teams have sufficient points in advance on the Spain and the Sweden to dispute the trophy at the time of their last match. However, the Brazilian ones leave favorite because they evolve/move in residence in front of more than 200.000 spectators and they need only one tie to be titrated, since Uruguay conceded a point vis-a-vis Spain. With the return of the cloakrooms, the Brazilian opening of the score by Friaça definitively seems to bury the Uruguyan hopes. Uruguay manages nevertheless to mark two goals by Juan Alberto Schiaffino then Alcides Ghiggia to take a lead in wire 2-1 and to plunge the few 200.000 spectators in a deep distress. So with the final whistle, the traditional ceremonial of handing-over of the trophy to the winner is upset. The president of FIFA, Jules Rimet, is even constrained to only go down on the lawn to give the World cup to Varela.
Uruguay leaves to defend its title in Suisse later four years. Obdulio Varela, 37 years old, is then the oldest player to have disputed a match of World cup. After passhaving easily passed the first turn, Varela is wounded in quarters against the England (4-2). Key Varela and two other players declare fixed price for the semi-final against the Hungary, lost 4-2 after prolongation.
