Oars

the Oars is a common French, located in the department and the area of the Meeting.

Its inhabitants is called them Avironnais.

Geography

Bordering on Saint-Leu, Cilaos, Saint-Louis and Pond-Salted the, the commune has only 150 meters of littoral frontage. In its highest part, it shelters an attractive village which one calls Tévelave .

History

The first colonists settle close to the Sèche gully towards 1719, but the commune is created only the January 8th 1894. Antoine Hibon is its first mayor. Previously, the zone is only one section of Saint-Louis.

Infrastructures

One finds on the communal territory a public college, the college Adrien Cadet. One in addition finds there a public of mainstream education, technological and professional college, the college of the Oars, which counted 1.100 pupils with the re-entry 2005.

Famous characters

The history of the Oars is marked by the figure of the Martin father, named cleaned the April 22nd 1879. He undertakes the conversion of the immigrant workers Hindou S and in addition tries to exempt to them the expensive state education in République. Stopped by the gendarmerie, he predicts a sad fate to him. A little later a gendarme makes a deadly fall of horse. The Martin father is tiny room to give the mass in an underground of Tévelave.

It will be noted in addition that the Botaniste Thérésien Cadet (1937 - 1987) was originating in the commune, and more precisely of the Tévelave.
