O Sanctissima
O Sanctissima is a catholic prayer dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its Latin title means “O Very Holy” in French. Still today, the Latin original version is requested much and sung that the translated versions.
The prayer was made up at the 18th century and its author is unknown. At the 19th century, Antonín Dvořák composed a mass which sang this prayer.
The German text was written by Johannes Daniel Falk. An inscription in the Cathédrale of Whorl points out the first words of the song. Sometimes, O Sanctissima is played as a Christmas carol. The Christmas carols O of the fröhliche (German) or O how joyfully (English) take as a starting point the prayer but have different words.
The prayer points out holiness, the piety and the softness of the Virgin Mary. She says that Marie is loved without spot; this referred to the Immaculate-Design. This prayer underlines the beauty of the Virgin Mary, in particular by the formula Tota Pulchra Es, which is also the title of another prayer.
The two first towards third stanza clearly refer to the Cantique of the canticles: “As a lily in the middle of the spines, Such is my friend among the young girls.” (Ct 2:2). The formula “request for us” is often repeated, as in the Litanies of Lorette. Lastly, the request “For us request per hour of our death” can also be found in the Ave Maria.
