Toponymy

The toponym OSI appears in the forms Ouce (1343, homages of Béarn), Ousse (XIVe century, censier of Béarn), Ousa (1449, payments of the Court Majour de Béarn), Oussa (1463, titles of Lées-Athas), Feels-Stephen Ousse (1608, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).

It is a gasconisation of the Basque oltzo, construction in boards.

History

Paul Raymond note the existence of a vassal laic abbey of the Viscount of Béarn.
In 1385, OSI counted 42 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Winder.

The economy of the commune is primarily directed towards agriculture and the breeding (bovines and sheep). The manufacture of farm cheeses (AOC Ossau-Iraty) is also one of the resources of the commune.

  • Marie Asserquet (1765-1849), Poétesse and singer of aürosts, to see OSI-in-Winder and other communes and of retributive inspired the
  • the brothers Cadier (George, Henri, Albert, Charles) who traversed in two summers the majority of the tops of more than 3000 meters between the Aneto and the Balaïtous. Many ways still bear their name.
