Technology OPC appeared in 1995. This technology dedicated to the interworking of system industrialists meant initially OLE for Process Control . OPC is not a Communication protocol but a technology based on technologies OLE, COM, and DCOM developed by Microsoft for its family of operating systems. Today, OPC is a trade mark of Foundation OPC. the technologies developed by Foundation OPC are based not only on COM/DCOM but also on work of W3C and OASIS. Specifications OPC can be separate in two categories:

  1. specifications based on COM/DCOM

  2. specification based the service Web.

The first category included:

  • OPC Common
  • OPC Dated Access
  • OPC Alarm and Event
  • OPC Historical Data Access

The second category gathers only one specification broken up into several part OPC Unified Architecture.
