OKB

OKB (in Russian: ОсобоеКонструкторскоеБюро - special Research department) were experimental research departments of the time of the the USSR. They were seen allotting a number by the State and were often baptized name of the principal originator. For example, OKB-51 which was directed by Pavel Soukhoï, was called OKB Soukhoï . For reasons of prestige, the research departments required to keep the same name with dead their famous engineers. Very many employees were however political prisoner internees.

These organizations of State never product bulk the Avion S, engines, helicopters or rocket S, nor any other vehicles or equipment designed on their premises. Generally, they had the equipment and the means to build prototypes then the designs which the State wanted to produce in series were then entrusted to factories of State without name, bearing they also only of the numbers.

They were transformed into companies of private law at the end of the Communist regime but many are still between the hands of the State.
