Oïrats

The term Oïrats (or Oyrats , Oyirads ; Mongolian: Ойрадын/Ojradyn) is the name which in Central Asia carries, in particular in China, populations known in Europe of the East under the name of Kalmouks.

These people, originating in Dzoungarie (today in Western China), migrated towards the west at the 17th century until in the area of low the the Volga in Russia. At the 18th century, part of the populations migrated in opposite direction towards China. Their name, Oyirad , would be derived from Mongolian Dörvn Öörd , “the four allied ones”.
