Nzinga Nkuwu
Mpanzu has Muzinga, Manicongo people Kongo , baptized the May 3rd 1491 under the name of João ( Jean Ier of Kongo ).
In 1482, the Portuguese under the control of Diogo Cão explore the river Congo to the surroundings of current the Matadi and contact the kingdom of Kongo. The authority of king Nzinga Nkuwu seems wide on the majority of the people of the group Kongo. Diogo Caõ goes back to Congo in 1485 and 1487 and facilitates the exchange of ambassadors between Portugal and Congo.
In 1490, an important Portuguese embassy accompanied catholic missionaries is established with Mbali, the capital of Congo, where it receives a favorable reception of Manicongo. This one converted with Catholicism and takes the name of João Ier, while its capital is renamed San Salvador.
At the end of the century, in front of the resistance of the people, Nzinga Nkuwu and his Mpanzou son return to the animism, and run up against the queen mother and her other wire Nzinga Mbemba, remained faithful to Catholicism. This opposition between the two brothers will lead to the civil war as of the disappearance of Nzinga Nkuwu in 1507. Nzinga Mbemba goes up on the throne after having overcome and having killed his/her Mpanzou brother and takes as Christian name Alphonso Ier.
