Nyx

In the Greek Mythology, Nyx (in Greek old Νýξ / Nýx , in Latin Nox ) is the goddess and the personification of the Night.

According to the Théogonie of Hésiode, it and its brother the Érèbe (the infernal Darkness) is the first divinities resulting from the paramount Chaos.

Its residence is beyond the country of Atlas, in the extreme West.

It generates with Érèbe:

  • Ether, the most brilliant part of the upper atmosphere;
  • Héméra, the Day;
  • Moired, the Destiny;
  • Charon, Nocher of the Hells;
  • Managed, Old age;
  • Philotès, Affection or Tenderness;
  • Momos, the Sarcastic remark;
  • Crammed, the Fraud;
  • Dolos, the Trick;
  • Moros, Fate;
  • Oizès, Misery.

Then only, it generates:

According to other sources it would be also the mother:

  • of the Hespérides, guardians of the apples of gold;
  • of terrible the Moires, tisseuses of the destiny of the men and the gods;
  • of Némésis, Revenge and Divine Justice;
  • of the Érinyes, persecuting divinities;
  • of the Kères, Spirits of violent deaths;
  • of Éris, the Discord;
  • of Lysed, Anger;
  • of Hécate, the goddess of sorcery;
  • of the Styx, another river of the Hells.
