Nymphidius Sabinus

From 65 until its death in 68, during the reign of Néron, Gaius Nymphidius Sabinus , or Nymphidius Sabinus, (towards 35-68) was in Rome prefect of the bodyguard of the emperor, known under the name of Praetorian guard. He divided this station with Gaius Ophonius Tigellinus, which had replaced his/her colleague Faenius Rufus. With the suicide of Néron gift, T it was one of the causes, it tried to proclaim emperor and was killed by the Praetorian ones.

Biography

He was the son of Nymphidia one freed from the emperor. Some historians think that the father of Nymphidius Sabinus was a Gladiateur named Martianus; but a great number of others ensure that he was the son of Caligula.

After the Conspiracy of Rammer against Néron, this possible cousin of Nymphidius, the many ones of executions which followed made it possible Nymphidius to rise in the scale of the capacity; and he became the fellow-member of the Préfet of the court, Tigellin.

During second half of the Sixties, Néron became increasingly unpopular near the people and of the army, and the rebellions which resulted from it ended up causing its fall and its suicide into 68. Nymphidius gradually consolidated its authority on the Praetorian ones by multiplying the promises of substantial rewards. It encouraged the Praetorian Garde to be declared for Galba, which had as a result the judgment of Néron by the Sénat and its suicide shortly after.

After the death of Néron, Nymphidius claimed to go up on the throne pretexting that he was the illegitimate son of Caligula. The Praetorian ones realized that Galba which approached was more to fear that Nymphidius and they killed the apprentice dictator.
