Nyctalus lasiopterus
Large Noctule ( Nyctalus lasiopterus ) is largest of the species of bats present in Europe. Its size reached 14 to 17 cm for a scale from 45 to 50 cm. It is rare and its biology is rather badly known. It meets especially in the Iberian peninsula and around the Mediterranean basin. In France, its presence is sporadic.
A study of 2007 based on the follow-up of the isotopic composition of the blood of large the noctules and of that of the potential preys shows that this species which usually consumes large Insecte S feeds from small Passereau X at the time of the night migration of those. The species copies even its period of setting-low with these migrations. This phenomenon is especially sensitive during the migrations of autumn. After the observation of the presence of feathers in the excrements of noctules described in 2001, this study confirms the assumption of this predation which does not have until now step which been able to be observed on line. Large Noctule would be the only predator known to date able to catch birds in full flight and to consume them without being posed with ground. Nobody never yet was pilot of this night hunting by ultrasounds and echolocation and which would be often practiced with more than 1.000 meters of altitude.
