Ny-Ålesund

Ny-Ålesund ( new Norwegian Ålesund in ) is one of the four agglomerations currently inhabited with the Svalbard. It is located on the peninsula of Brøgger, on southern bank of bay of King (Kongsfjord).

Ny-Ålesund is often quoted as the agglomeration more in north of the world () although two establishments are even more in North: Eureka (80 ° NR) and Alert (82 ° 29 ' NR), both located on the island of Ellesmere, with the Canada. Currently, it is the property of the company King Bay A/S (called Kings Bay Kull Company until in 1998). Kings Bay A/S maintains there a team logistic of at least 20 people throughout the year. In summer, the activity is with its maximum with a population of more than one hundred of people (researchers, assistants and logisticians). Research organizations of several countries are present on the spot: Norway of course, but also England, Germany, Italy, Korea, China, Japan and France.
There are not many possibilities of going by its own means in Ny-Ålesund. Most of the visitors arrives there on board boats of cruising which make stopover there. This Tourisme has a considerable impact on the daily newspaper of the researchers (imagine hundreds of tourists in a hamlet of a hundred people). The community is however connected to Longyearbyen by an air line whose flights are ensured in a very random way. These flights are mainly intended to ensure rotations of the scientific personnel, but are accessible to the tourists if those are ready to spend 1.500 €. Ny-Ålesund is also the place or is the most septentrional railroad of the world, with less than 1.000 km of the North pole. It does not circulate today any more but is preserved to preserve the mining inheritance of the city.
