Nuuk

Nuuk (in the past Godthåb , of the Danish “Good hope”) is the capital of the Greenland.

History

The site of Nuuk was inhabited by the Viking S as of the 10th century and by the populations Inuit since the 13th century.

The city was founded in 1728 by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede under the name of Godthåb, whereas Greenland was a Norwegian colony. It was the first city of the island, with the European direction of the term.

Although always named Godthåb by its Danish residents, the city bears officially the name of Nuuk, in Kalaallisut, since 1979.

Geography

Nuuk is located at the mouth of Godthåbsfjorden, on the west coast of the Greenland, to approximately 240 km in the south of the Polar circle Arctic.

Demography

Nuuk had a population of 13.889 inhabitants in 2002, that is to say nearly the quarter of the total population of Greenland.

The commune of Nuuk, which includes approximately 100.000 km ² of Greenland, counts approximately 15.000 inhabitants.

Nuuk is the seat of the University of Greenland ( Ilisimatusarfik ).
